The installation and replacement of diamond wheel should be carried out according to the manual (instructions) of the machine.
Do not install the diamond wheels that unfit for this equipment in terms of technical characteristics: rotation frequency, outer and bore diameters, work material. It is forbidden to use grinding and cutting wheels made of SHM with cracks on the surface, with delamination of the diamond-bearing layer. To provide the correct installation and toughness of clamping before installing the diamond wheel it is necessary to clean thoroughly the contacting base and fastening surfaces from corrosion, dirt. If it’s necessary, to sand the surface of the spindle and clamping flanges. The wheel must be firmly fixed on the spindle of the machine. The installation should be carried out in the direction of rotation indicated at the end. The wheel should be brought smoothly to the workpiece, avoiding strokes and shocks. While in operation, it is recommended to use the wheel on the same machine with one set of clamping flanges, and use without removal and re-installation untill the final usage has occurred. For safe grinding, it is necessary to test the wheel for the strength of joint between the layer and the body, subjecting the wheel to rotation at idle (no load) within 3-5 minutes.
When using diamond grinding wheels, the following instructions should be observed:
- Grinding wheels are to be mounted on holders or flanges and should not be removed until final usage has occurred.
- The tools are to be mounted securely on the machine spindle in accordance with the technical specifications of the equipment used for diamond tool machining.
- Metal bonded and vitrified bonded grinding wheels must be used with coolant, coolant is also advisable for resin bonded grinding wheels.
- The cleaning of resin bonded diamond wheels is to be performed with a pumice stone of metal bonded wheels with a green silicon carbide bar made with grit sizes 1 or 2 sizes larger than that of the diamond wheel.
Dressing (truing) of diamond layer is necessary to restore its shape, eliminate defects from its working surface, and to restore the required profile. As a rule this is performed without coolant. The most productive way of dressing a diamond layer is to grind it with abrasive wheels. The dressing is performed by wheels of white alumina and green silicon carbide with vitrified bonds with grit sizes 1 or 2 sizes larger than those of the diamond wheels. Wheels with a hardness of K – H are necessary for dressing of resin bond wheels and wheels of a hardness of M – K are necessary for dressing of metal bond wheels. The smaller the grit size of the superabrasive material, the softer the dressing tool must be.
